Evolution of Masturbation – Primates Handjob

Primates masturbation

Biologists at University College London have explained the prevalence and evolutionary significance of autosexual behavior or handjob of primates. Masturbation increases reproductive success in males and helps avoid contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

To conduct the analysis, the researchers analyzed information from nearly 400 sources, including 246 scientific articles, as well as 150 questionnaires and personal interviews from primatologists and zookeepers. Based on these data, the study authors tracked the spread of autosexual behavior or jerking off among primates to understand when and why it developed in both females and males.

The researchers found that masturbation has a long evolutionary history among various primate species and was most likely present in the common ancestor of all apes, including the great apes and the ancestors of Homo sapiens. Biologists have tested two alternative hypotheses that explain the origin of this behavior.

First hypothesis

The “post-copulatory selection hypothesis” suggests that masturbation contributes to successful fertilization. This can be achieved in various ways. First, masturbation (without ejaculation) increases arousal before intercourse. This can be a particularly useful tactic for low-ranking males, where copulation can be interrupted by stronger partners. In these situations, it is important for reproductive success to ejaculate quickly.

Secondly, masturbation (with ejaculation) allows males to excrete low-quality cum with “old” spermatozoa, leaving fresh ones for mating. With this behavior, the chances of fertilization in competition with other males increase. In favor of this hypothesis is the fact that masturbation in males developed in conjunction with behavior in which group sex, gang bang and orgies practices are common.

Second hypothesis

The second version, the “pathogen avoidance hypothesis,” suggests that male masturbation reduces the likelihood of contracting infections after copulation by clearing the urethra with ejaculate resulting from autosexual behavior. Biologists have also found evidence to support this hypothesis, showing that the development of masturbation was accompanied by a high burden of STIs on the primate tree of life.

Females masturbation

The significance of masturbation in female primates remains less clear. Although this happens quite often, there are fewer reports describing this behavior, which reduces the analytical power of the statistics. The researchers believe that more data on female sexual behavior is needed to better understand the evolutionary role of female masturbation.
